Hellenic Coast Guard Rescues 195 Migrants and Refugees South of Crete
Hellenic Coast Guard personnel executing maritime search-and-rescue operations south of Crete to transfer 195 rescued migrants safely to Greek port authorities.

The Hellenic Coast Guard has rescued 195 migrants and refugees across four separate operations conducted south of the Greek island of Crete over recent days, capitalizing on favorable weather conditions along Eastern Mediterranean sea routes.

In the latest operation, an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by EU border agency Frontex spotted a vessel carrying 50 migrants roughly 40 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes, prompting a coast guard vessel to intercept and safely transfer the passengers. Earlier, another rescue vessel picked up 65 migrants 42 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes, bringing them safely to port. Additionally, two separate rescue missions conducted south of Agia Galini brought 40 migrants to safety in each operation after Frontex drones pinpointed their coordinates in mild sea conditions with winds reaching up to Beaufort scale 5. All 195 rescued individuals are being processed under established protocols for relocation to mainland Greece. According to Greece's Ministry of Migration and Asylum, overall asylum-seeker arrivals in Greece during the first seven months of 2026 fell by more than 35 percent compared to the same period in 2025, though Crete and Gavdos remain critical maritime entry corridors from North Africa and Turkey into the European Union.
