The Iranian government has officially initiated state-run military training programs for civilian volunteers under the banner of the 'Janfada' (Self-Sacrifice) campaign, responding to heightened regional conflict and growing threats of direct engagement with United States and Israeli forces.
According to reports from the West Asia News Agency (WANA), the nationwide civil defense initiative formally commenced on Sunday (October 4, 2026) across three specialized military training centers in the capital, Tehran. Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Arian-Nejad, Deputy Chief of Army Education and Training, announced that personnel from four primary army units are leading the instruction modules, which begin with foundational drills before advancing to specialized combat and emergency operations. Spearheaded under the supervision of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the paramilitary Basij force, the mobilization aims to establish up to 1,000 volunteer civilian defense battalions capable of weapon operation, local surveillance, urban defense, and emergency rescue. While military officials frame the initiative as a critical preparedness measure against potential ground invasions, domestic observers have raised questions regarding the oversight, structure, and operational integration of the newly formed paramilitary auxiliary units.
