More than six nations have formally expressed interest in joining the newly formed 'Makkah Defense Alliance'—a collective security pact modeled after NATO and formed between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey—Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced during a press conference in Islamabad on Friday (October 2, 2026).
Speaking to media representatives, Dar emphasized that the coalition remains strictly defensive in nature and holds no aggressive intentions toward any nation. Established on August 7, 2026, in the holy city of Makkah, the tripartite alliance operates under a collective defense clause stipulating that an armed attack against any member state will be treated as an attack against all. While Dar refrained from naming the specific applicant countries, he confirmed that the alliance's headquarters will be established in Saudi Arabia and announced the appointment of retired Pakistani Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood as the bloc's inaugural Secretary-General. The foreign minister also disclosed that an emergency session of the alliance will convene next week in Saudi Arabia to evaluate security conditions following recent cross-border missile and drone strikes targeted at the Kingdom, reiterating Pakistan's unwavering commitment to Saudi national security.
