Investigative journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker Antony Loewenstein has told news network Al Jazeera that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and main opposition 'Change Block' leader Gadi Eisenkot share identical core political character and ideological goals, specifically the realization of a "Greater Israel."
Speaking amid heightened Israeli political maneuvering, Loewenstein countered public perceptions that Eisenkot—a former Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff widely viewed as a potential future Prime Minister—represents a meaningful departure from Netanyahu's right-wing governance. According to Loewenstein, while Netanyahu uses overt anti-Arab rhetoric on the campaign trail, Eisenkot harbors similar hostility toward Arab nations.
While acknowledging tactical policy differences between the two leaders regarding management of the West Bank, Gaza, Iran, and broader Middle Eastern diplomatic strategy, Loewenstein emphasized that a government led by Eisenkot would bring minimal fundamental change. He noted that an Eisenkot-led administration might slightly curtail extremist West Bank settlers or arrest a few violent figures, but would remain firmly aligned with Netanyahu on core expansionist goals—encompassing all of Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan, alongside portions of Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
