Ocean Viking Rescues 101 Migrants in Central Mediterranean Operations
Humanitarian vessel Ocean Viking rescuing vulnerable migrants from an unseaworthy boat in the Central Mediterranean.

Humanitarian search and rescue vessel Ocean Viking, operated by SOS Méditerranée, rescued 101 migrants facing life-threatening conditions during two separate operations in the Central Mediterranean between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (October 6–7, 2026).

The first operation was conducted in the Libyan Search and Rescue (SAR) zone following distress alerts from NGO Alarm Phone and a Frontex reconnaissance aircraft. Rescuers brought 60 people to safety—including 27 men, 21 women (five of whom were pregnant), and 12 children—who had been stranded at sea for two days without food or water. Several survivors suffered severe chemical fuel burns caused by gasoline mixing with seawater inside the overcrowded boat.

One pregnant woman required emergency medical evacuation by Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel to Lampedusa alongside her husband. A second operation in the Maltese SAR zone successfully rescued 41 individuals, including 16 unaccompanied minors, from a deflating rubber dinghy.

Italian maritime authorities instructed the Ocean Viking to disembark the survivors at the distant port of Naples under Italy's Piantedosi Decree rules, drawing criticism from aid workers who warned that the multi-day transit poses unnecessary health risks to vulnerable survivors. International Organization for Migration (IOM) data indicates that 1,647 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean during the first half of 2026.
