Over 1,800 Arrested in France as 'Yellow Vest' Cost-of-Living Protests Explode into Nationwide Violence
Security forces deployed in central Paris as nationwide Yellow Vest protests turn violent.

Violent clashes, arson, and widespread looting during cost-of-living protests organized by the "Yellow Vest" movement and allied unions across France have led to more than 1,800 arrests, according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.

Speaking on Sunday (October 18, 2026), Minister Nuñez confirmed on social media platform X that over 500 police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters were injured during the weekend unrest. According to Interior Ministry estimates, 550,000 people participated in nationwide demonstrations, including 110,000 in Paris, though organizers claimed up to 800,000 turnout. While the main march in Paris remained largely peaceful, extreme violence erupted in regional cities. The historic City Hall in Limoges was completely destroyed by fire, while shops in Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux suffered extensive looting. Supermarket giant Carrefour reported that over 50 of its outlets suffered structural damage amounting to millions of euros.

Tragically, the protests also saw severe casualties: a demonstrator suffered a fatal cardiorespiratory arrest on Boulevard Magenta in Paris, and a 17-year-old teenager lost a hand due to a police-deployed grenade in Saint-Étienne. In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu scheduled an emergency ministerial meeting for Sunday evening alongside mayors from Paris, Marseille, and Lyon to address economic fallout, insurance claims, and police tactics. Meanwhile, National Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet is weighing a parliamentary commission of inquiry as political opposition mounts intense pressure on the government.
