Cross-border security tensions between Islamabad and Kabul escalated dramatically on Thursday (October 1, 2026) following a series of overnight airstrikes carried out by the Pakistani Air Force inside Afghan territory.
According to a statement released Thursday morning by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information, the military conducted calibrated air raids targeting alleged terrorist hideouts across two separate locations, claiming to have neutralized at least 22 armed militants. However, Afghan Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid strongly refuted Islamabad's account, stating via social media platform X that Pakistani fighter jets struck residential areas in Chogam (Shultan district, Kunar province) and Safaar (Garmser district, Helmand province) late Wednesday night. Mujahid confirmed that the strikes destroyed three civilian homes, killing nine people—including women and children—and injuring 11 others. Condemning the act as a blatant violation of international law and Afghan sovereignty, Kabul warned against continued aggression. The strikes follow two weeks of heightened friction after recent militant attacks on mosques and security posts within Pakistan, for which Islamabad holds Afghan-based insurgent groups responsible. Independent media outlets, including Al Jazeera, noted that casualty figures presented by both sides could not be independently verified.
