The United States has formally completed the full withdrawal of its military forces from Iraq after 23 years, transferring total national defense responsibility to the Iraqi Armed Forces, US President Donald Trump announced.
Describing the military exit as a historic triumph for both Washington and Baghdad, President Trump declared that US-led coalition forces achieved their core objectives, including the operational defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group. Reflecting on the human toll of the multi-decade conflict, Trump characterized the engagement as "the end of an excursion from hell," honoring the sacrifice of over 4,500 American service members killed, 31,000 wounded, and hundreds of civilian contractors lost since the 2003 invasion. Emphasizing a departure from previous chaotic pullouts, Trump confirmed that explicit orders were issued for military logistics teams to retrieve all American defense hardware and infrastructure, famously instructing troops to leave nothing behind and "bring back every single screw". While the United States will maintain targeted intelligence sharing and bilateral security cooperation, Iraqi military authorities have now assumed full control of defense operations across the country.
