Fourteen people, including two senior military commanders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), were killed when a civilian government charter plane crashed in western DRC on Friday (September 25, 2026).
According to a statement released on Saturday by Congolese military spokesperson Major General Efomi Ekenge, the aircraft crashed into an open area of a residential neighborhood in Kenge while traveling from Kikwit in Kwilu province to the capital, Kinshasa. The impact ignited a intense fire that engulfed the aircraft, killing all passengers and crew on board. Among the deceased are Lieutenant General Motumbo Katalei Tiende, head of the DRC military court, and Lieutenant General Bakumi Likulia, the military auditor general. Tryphon Kin-Kiey Mulumba, chairman of the DRC Civil Aviation Board, confirmed to news agencies that an official investigation committee has been established to ascertain the cause of the crash, as suspicions linger regarding potential involvement by M23 rebel insurgents active in regional conflict zones.
