The bilateral meeting took place in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, on Thursday evening (October 8, 2026), ahead of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit held in the Caspian Sea coastal resort of Avaza on Friday. Addressing Pezeshkian, Putin praised Tehran's diplomatic efforts following hostilities that began in late February, reiterating Russia's readiness to facilitate a peaceful resolution within its power. Highlighting the deepening economic, strategic, and military convergence between Moscow and Tehran amidst heavy Western sanctions, both leaders emphasized transitioning toward a multilateral global framework to counter unilateral pressure. The talks occurred as diplomatic avenues between Tehran and Washington remain stalled, with Pezeshkian reiterating that direct negotiations with the United States remain unproductive.
