Saudi Arabia's air defense forces have intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebel movement over the capital city of Riyadh, neutralizing the projectile before it reached its intended target.
According to an official statement issued by the Saudi Civil Defense on Thursday (October 8, 2026), falling shrapnel and debris from the destroyed missile damaged civil infrastructure, including a local school (kindergarten) and a nearby medical clinic complex in Riyadh. Authorities confirmed that protective interception protocols prevented direct impacts on major installations, though civil defense teams were deployed to secure the damaged facilities. The incident follows a surge in cross-border missile strikes; earlier on Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition announced the interception of two additional missiles directed toward Riyadh and one targeted at Khamis Mushait. The military escalation follows attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport earlier in the week, which resulted in three fatalities and 36 injuries.
