At least 33 civilians were killed and 18 others wounded after Russian military forces launched targeted air strikes hitting two passenger buses in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region.
Emergency rescue teams confirmed the casualties on Thursday (October 8, 2026), sharing horrific images of burnt-out vehicle hulls and civilian casualties near the blast site in eastern Ukraine.
Donetsk Regional Governor Vadym Filashkin condemned the strike, stating that Russian forces intentionally bombarded the public transport vehicles to maximize civilian casualties. Local prosecutors revealed that guided glide bombs were used in the attack on Kramatorsk, a critical urban hub that Russian troops have been attempting to surround alongside neighboring Sloviansk in an effort to secure total control over the Donbas region.
The strike follows a sharp escalation in Russian bombardments against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, with UN reports indicating that 2026 civilian casualties in Ukraine had already surpassed full-year figures from 2025 by August. Moscow has not yet issued an official statement regarding the Kramatorsk bus strikes.
