A barrage of Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine on Friday (October 16, 2026) killed at least 8 people and injured 60 others, heavily damaging energy infrastructure, food processing facilities, and multiple commercial shopping centers.
The targeted wave of attacks disrupted power supplies for over 1 million residents nationwide. In the eastern city of Kharkiv, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed two fatalities—a 71-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man—alongside 12 injuries across three districts. Additional civilian fatalities were reported in the frontline town of Kramatorsk (Donetsk Oblast), Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, and northwestern Volyn Oblast, where a drone strike hit a food processing plant and a customs terminal in Kovel along the vital Kyiv-Poland highway, igniting 10 cargo trucks.
Commercial centers were heavily hit, including a shopping complex in the northern frontline city of Sumy and the Equator Shopping Centre in Rivne, where Governor Oleksandr Koval reported one fatality and seven injuries. While Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported that repair crews successfully restored power to over 1 million affected households, Volyn Governor Roman Romanyuk and Lutsk Mayor Andriy Razumovsky warned that local blackouts could persist for at least 24 hours as emergency grid repairs continue.
