A drone strike carried out by the Sudanese army at the Amiet market in the disputed Abyei district killed 53 people and wounded at least 27 others, according to local authorities.
The attack, which involved multiple munitions targeting a transit point for goods near RSF-controlled areas, hit vulnerable civilians including women, children, merchants, and refugees.
The United Nations and South Sudan's foreign ministry strongly condemned the strike, with Juba summoning the Sudanese ambassador. This incident is part of a broader, deadly escalation of back-and-forth drone and airstrikes across Sudan—including a recent strike in West Kordofan that killed 80 people—amid the ongoing brutal conflict between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
