Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman reaffirmed that a robust rural economy serves as the foundation for a prosperous Bangladesh while speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conference held at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka on Saturday (October 3, 2026).
Addressing international delegates, business leaders, and policymakers, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman outlined his government's multi-sectoral development agenda. He emphasized agricultural modernization through improved irrigation, technology integration, and agro-processing exports, while reaffirming the state's responsibility in supporting nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees and calling for international support for their dignified repatriation to Myanmar. Highlighting targeted social protection, he detailed plans for the rollout of 'Family Cards' for underprivileged women, 'Farmer Cards' for agricultural subsidies, 'Health Cards' for universal care, and 'Universal Cards' for consolidated citizen services. He announced the recruitment of 100,000 healthcare workers—80 percent of whom will be women—to strengthen primary care. On education and youth development, the Prime Minister committed to free uniforms, bags, mid-day meals, and scholarships from Class 1, alongside tuition-free education for girls up to the graduate level. To ensure water security and climate resilience, his administration plans to excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals over five years, advance the Padma Barrage Project, implement the Teesta Master Plan, and plant 250 million trees nationwide. Concluding his speech, he underscored the strategic value of the Bay of Bengal, advocating for deeper regional trade, blue economy initiatives, and mutual cooperation built on dialogue and national sovereignty.
