The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has temporarily suspended access to the National Identity Card (NID) server on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as a precautionary measure against potential global cyberattacks following the discovery of a severe security flaw in the PHP programming language.
System Manager of the EC's NID Wing, Muhammad Ashraf Hossain, confirmed that technical teams are actively working to audit and secure the database infrastructure, assuring that server operations will resume as soon as safety protocols are established. Concurrently, Bangladesh’s national cyber security team (BGD e-GOV CIRT) issued a high-priority alert to safeguard critical national information infrastructure.
The defensive shutdown follows the revelation of a decade-old, critical PHP vulnerability discovered using artificial intelligence by researchers at US cybersecurity firms Calif and Wiz. The US National Security Agency (NSA) issued an emergency threat bulletin on October 21, triggering preemptive service suspensions by hundreds of major entities worldwide—including the UK Government, the Finnish Government, Wikimedia, and French telecom giant Orange.
