Bangladesh is forecasted to surpass neighboring India in Per Capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of 2026, according to the latest flagship projections released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In its newly released October 2026 World Economic Outlook report, the IMF estimates that Bangladesh’s per capita GDP will reach $2,886 USD this year, compared to India’s projected per capita GDP of $2,749 USD.
Economic analysts and international observers view this comparative milestone against the world's third-largest economy as a notable structural achievement for Bangladesh's economic trajectory. According to financial experts, the primary pillars accelerating Bangladesh's per capita income expansion are the resilient Ready-Made Garment (RMG) export sector, robust inward wage earner remittances, and steadily rising female participation in the formal workforce. Per capita GDP, calculated by dividing a nation's total economic output by its population, serves as a standard global indicator of an average citizen's economic output and productivity.
