Bangladesh has formally expressed strong interest in deepening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation with the Spanish city of Malaga across key sectors, including agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), skill development, trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam held an official bilateral meeting with the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre Prados, at the Mayor’s Office in Malaga, Spain.

During the meeting, State Minister Shama Obayed briefed Mayor Francisco de la Torre Prados on Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic journey, expressing sincere gratitude for the continuous support extended by Spain and member states of the European Union (EU). Discussions highlighted several high-potential areas for inter-city and institutional collaboration, such as university-to-university partnerships, student exchange programs, creative economy initiatives, trade expansion, and modern agricultural technology.

In response, Mayor Francisco de la Torre Prados commended Bangladesh for its humanitarian gesture in providing shelter to 1.3 million forcibly displaced Rohingya refugees, expressing his hope for a swift, safe, and sustainable resolution to the crisis. Both sides agreed to establish direct communication links between municipal authorities in Malaga and relevant Bangladeshi agencies to foster future municipal governance and economic partnerships.
