The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh on Sunday (October 18, 2026) to formally seek detailed explanations and official grounds regarding the execution of two Bangladeshi expatriate nationals in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on the development, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam stated that although the government had not initially received official diplomatic communication regarding the executions, the Bangladesh mission’s labor wing in Saudi Arabia reported that the two individuals—identified by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) as Nazrul Islam and Sweety Akhter—were convicted under Saudi law following an incident inside a Mecca mosque.
State Minister Shama Obaid described the tragedy as a severe lesson for expatriates regarding foreign legal frameworks and noted that Bangladesh has dispatched formal letters seeking comprehensive case details to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased remains.
