The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has issued a public warning cautioning capital market investors against buying mutual fund units solely based on rising market prices or unverified social media hype, urging them to strictly evaluate the Net Asset Value (NAV) before making investment decisions.
In an official press release signed by BSEC Executive Director and Spokesperson Md. Abul Kalam on Monday (October 5, 2026), the stock market regulator highlighted that several mutual fund units are currently trading at market prices significantly higher than their intrinsic NAV per unit. The commission explained that a mutual fund’s NAV represents the total market value of its underlying assets minus liabilities, divided by the total number of units. BSEC emphasized that in the event of a mutual fund’s liquidation, unit holders are entitled only to the fund's net asset value, meaning purchasing units at inflated market prices carries substantial financial risk. The regulator advised retail investors to refrain from acting on rumors, social media promotions, or third-party influence, urging them instead to thoroughly analyze official financial disclosures, portfolio composition, fund tenure, and published NAV data before investing.
