Court Sends Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman to Jail Following One-Day Remand in Airport Assault Case
Former MP Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman is escorted under police custody at the Dhaka Metropolitan Court premises on Sunday.

A Dhaka court has ordered former Member of Parliament Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman to be sent to prison following the completion of a one-day remand in connection with a case involving physical assault, obstructing public servants, and inciting chaos at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam passed the order on Sunday (October 4, 2026) after rejecting a bail petition submitted by defense counsel Advocate Abdur Razzak. Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station produced Akhtaruzzaman in court, informing the tribunal that the accused provided crucial details during interrogation regarding the October 1 incident, where he allegedly assaulted Airport Executive Director Group Captain S.M. Ragib Samad during a passenger dispute over delayed baggage handling from a flight originating in Medina. Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Farooq Farooqui opposed the bail motion, while the court instructed prison authorities to handle defense applications for specialized medical treatment and division privileges per standard jail codes. Akhtaruzzaman was originally arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) from his Cantonment residence on Friday, October 2.
