State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury has pledged that the government will take necessary measures to enforce newspaper wage board awards for journalists, promising to raise the matter directly before the Cabinet if required.
Addressing a exchange meeting with leaders of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the ministry’s conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (October 4, 2026), the State Minister emphasized that protecting the welfare and rights of media personnel is vital to retaining talented professionals. Acknowledging ongoing deadlocks regarding the Ninth Wage Board and demands for the Tenth Wage Board, Chowdhury stated that consultations are actively underway with the Ministry of Labor and media owners. He urged journalist organizations to formulate a unified proposal defining professional journalists to curb fake reporters and unverified digital portals that compromise democratic discourse. Regarding cyber security legislation, the State Minister clarified that the law aims to protect citizens from online harassment rather than suppress media freedom, revealing that the government is considering proposals to require court approval before initiating legal proceedings against journalists for inadvertent reporting errors.
