The air quality in Dhaka remained 'unhealthy' on Monday (October 12, 2026), with the capital ranking 6th on the global list of cities with the worst air pollution, according to data from the Swiss-based air quality monitoring organization IQAir.
Recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 169, Dhaka's atmosphere fell into the 'unhealthy' bracket, posing potential respiratory risks for city residents, particularly sensitive groups. Globally, India's Kolkata topped the pollution rankings with an AQI score of 193, also categorized as 'unhealthy.' Other heavily polluted metropolitan areas included Hanoi, Vietnam in second place with 191, Beijing, China in third with 178, Singapore in fourth with 172, and Jakarta, Indonesia in fifth with 170.
According to IQAir standards, AQI scores between 151 and 200 are deemed 'unhealthy,' while levels between 201 and 300 are classified as 'very unhealthy,' and scores exceeding 301 signal hazardous conditions. Environmental experts continue to urge vulnerable citizens to take precautions when commuting outdoors amid persistent urban smog and seasonal climate shifts.
