Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a bilateral meeting with a high-level Canadian delegation led by Canada’s Minister of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai, at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat on Monday (October 12, 2026).
The meeting focused on bolstering bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, and exploring new avenues for strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Canada. Key discussions encompassed the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, energy security, technical and vocational education, agriculture, food security, climate finance, and poverty alleviation. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman underscored that while hosting 1.3 million Rohingya refugees places immense economic and environmental pressure on Bangladesh, the permanent solution lies in their safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation to Myanmar.
Minister Sarai concurred on the necessity of a sustainable resolution in Myanmar. On economic and developmental fronts, Canada expressed keen interest in supplying crude oil and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and nursing training programs, and aiding agricultural technology through CIMMYT. Furthermore, PM Tarique Rahman highlighted upcoming domestic initiatives, including the "Krishak Card" for targeted agricultural inputs, the "Family Card" social safety integration to lift 2.85 million people out of poverty, canal excavation, and a 250-million tree plantation campaign. Minister Sarai noted Canada's global commitment of 13 billion CAD in climate financing over the next five years, which Bangladesh can leverage, and extended an official invitation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit Canada.
