In an effort to combat climate change, maintain ecological balance, and reduce the rising risks of lightning strikes, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu inaugurated a massive tree-plantation campaign on Thursday (October 22, 2026) to plant over 100,000 palmyra seeds across Lalmonirhat district.

The launching ceremony took place at 11:00 AM at the DC Park near Chandni Bazar in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila. Organized by Sabuj Seba Jubo Biggan Sangha under the slogan "Let us build a clean environment and adorn the earth with greenery," the initiative is being carried out simultaneously across all five upazilas of the district.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Minister Dulu pointed out that Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, which has given rise to new types of disasters alongside traditional natural calamities. Highlighting the sharp increase in lightning-related fatalities in recent years, he noted that while government measures have successfully brought casualties from cyclones and tidal surges close to zero, evolving weather patterns continue to pose unprecedented challenges.

Presided over by Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Muha Rashedul Haque Pradhan, the event was also attended by District Superintendent of Police Md. Asaduzzaman, the organization's founder Md. Khairul Islam, local officials, and over 100 volunteers. Organizers highlighted that the association has a strong track record in environmental conservation, having previously planted around 40,000 palmyra seeds along the railway line stretching from Teesta to Burimari, alongside various educational institution tree-planting drives and awareness seminars. They expressed optimism that this expanded campaign will foster greater public involvement in environmental protection and ensure a greener, more sustainable habitat for future generations.
