The government has formulated an integrated plan encompassing four major initiatives to tackle Dhaka's severe traffic congestion, improve public transport, and restore discipline on the capital's roads, according to senior officials of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
State Minister for Road Transport, Bridges, and Railways Habibur Rashid told BSS that isolated measures are insufficient, emphasizing that the comprehensive strategy involves removing buses older than 20 years, relocating key bus terminals (such as Sayedabad, Gabtoli, Mohakhali, and Gulistan), renovating 31 existing road routes, and introducing a new regulatory policy for auto-rickshaws and battery-powered three-wheelers.
Experts and transport planners noted that while these interconnected measures—supported by Road Transport and Highway Division Secretary Dr Mohammed Ziaul Haque—aim to reduce commute times, curb emissions, and enhance road safety, their success will depend on careful coordination, adequate replacement vehicles, seamless metro and feeder bus connections, and strict supervision across all agencies including BRTA, DTCA, and traffic police.
