Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md. Abdus Salam outlining the BDT 75-crore master plan for Dhanmondi Lake and Nazrul Sarobar during Tuesday's launch event.

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has unveiled a comprehensive BDT 75-crore master plan to restore Dhanmondi Lake and establish a modern open-air cultural center named 'Nazrul Sarobar' along its banks.

Speaking at the official launch of the Dhanmondi Lake re-excavation initiative on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), DSCC Administrator Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam outlined the multi-phase project designed to resolve decades of siltation, infrastructure decay, and environmental degradation across the historic 86-acre site. The immediate BDT 26-crore re-excavation phase aims to remove 162,534 cubic meters of accumulated sludge using two floating excavators and four barges over a one-year timeline. Following the dredging, the main BDT 50-crore infrastructure overhaul will install bank stabilization, LED lighting, CCTV coverage, three floating decks, an open-air gym, badminton courts, cafeterias, and a specialized 'Tree Hospital'. Furthermore, a BDT 25-crore project will establish 'Nazrul Sarobar' across 50.967 kathas near Road 13/A and 8/A directly opposite the Kabi Nazrul Institute. Modeled as a companion to Rabindra Sarobar, the cultural hub will feature an open-air amphitheater, a library and book corner dedicated to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, urban green plazas, and a themed restaurant serving the poet's favorite culinary dishes.
