The Election Commission (EC) has made significant progress in correcting National Identity Card (NID) information, settling 6,442,832 applications out of a total 6,570,842 received so far, according to updated data from the EC's National Identity Registration Wing as of October 18. However, 128,010 applications remain pending, while 1,355,157 have been rejected for various reasons.
Despite the substantial progress, the commission is focusing on speeding up pending applications, screening out unjustified requests, and preventing fraud by expanding the authority of officials at the upazila and district levels.
EC officials noted that applications submitted up to 2024 have been settled, and 2025 applications are nearing completion, though around 80,000 to 90,000 new applications arrive every month. Out of the pending cases, nearly 70,000 applications fall under category 'Gha' for 2025 and 2026, with higher concentrations in Dhaka and Cumilla.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told BSS that accuracy remains the primary objective, noting that unjustified applications are scrutinized and rejected. Furthermore, the EC has strengthened monitoring for date-of-birth corrections, placing greater emphasis on online-verifiable educational certificates, while taking a firm stance against fraud and handing culprits over to law enforcement agencies.
