The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is reviewing scheduling and operational plans for the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections, following statements from the State Minister for Local Government suggesting polls be completed between January and June.
Speaking to journalists at the Election Building in Agargaon on Thursday (October 1, 2026) after a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that the commission is formulating a pragmatic roadmap that accommodates social and logistical realities, including SSC examinations, the holy month of Ramadan, and national holidays. Secretary Ahmed highlighted ongoing discussions under the UNDP-supported 'BALLOT' project, aimed at bolstering institutional capacity among EC secretariat staff, field officials, law enforcement personnel, and media professionals to combat misinformation, disinformation, and online hate speech. Reaffirming the EC's commitment to maintaining electoral integrity following recent national polls, Ahmed noted that law enforcement deployment strategies—including potential military assistance—will be finalized after local environmental assessments, voter roll updates, and polling venue preparations are completed.
