Former Supreme Court Justice Syed Shahidur Rahman has called on the government to move beyond seminars and discussion meetings to implement tangible, field-level measures to contain Bangladesh's escalating dengue epidemic.
Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Actions to Prevent Dengue" held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium on Tuesday (October 13, 2026), Justice Shahidur Rahman highlighted that the absence of elected representatives in City Corporations and local government bodies has severely deprived citizens of vector control and public healthcare services. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Nature & Environmental Foundation and chaired by Manarat International University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rob.
Presenting the keynote paper, Prof. Dr. Mo. Mofizur Rahman, Head of Pediatrics at ICMH, outlined the severe strain placed on healthcare infrastructure, while panel discussants including Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Hasan Nasir, former Ambassador Sakib Ali, and Dr. Khorshed Ali Mian warned that dengue is approaching pandemic severity like COVID-19. Prof. Abdur Rob noted that despite over 100,000 citizens being diagnosed with dengue, public health interventions remain inadequate, calling on both the government and political parties to prioritize public welfare and vector eradication over political maneuvering.
