Police in Dhaka's Shah Ali area rescued a four- to five-day-old baby girl alive after she was found abandoned inside a black plastic bag on the roadside.
The rescue was initiated late Wednesday evening (September 23, 2026) when a local resident spotted the crying infant in an open lot alongside Road No. 8 in Block-D, Shah Ali. The caller immediately dialed the National Emergency Service 999 to request urgent assistance. Inspector Anwar Sattar, Public Relations Officer for National Emergency Service 999, confirmed Thursday (September 24) that call-taker Md. Sahel Khan received the emergency alert, which was dispatched to local police by ASI Md. Masum Billah. A team from Shah Ali Police Station responded to the scene and recovered the newborn. Police initially rushed the baby girl to the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital before transferring her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for specialized medical care. Shah Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam confirmed that the infant is currently under medical supervision as law enforcement authorities conduct an investigation to identify who abandoned the child.
