Garment Workers Block Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Uttara Demanding Salary Increase; Gridlock Paralyzes Northern Arterial Roads
The Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Azampur, Uttara, where traffic was brought to a standstill on Wednesday morning due to worker protests.

Readymade garment (RMG) workers staged a major road blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Uttara’s Azampur area on Wednesday (October 14, 2026), demanding minimum salary increases, causing massive traffic congestion across northern Dhaka.

Beginning around 11:00 AM, workers from various RMG factories across Uttara and Dakshinkhan gathered at Azampur and spilled over toward the Airport Roundabout. The demonstration halted traffic along one major flank of the highway, creating tailbacks that stretched into adjacent feeder roads and stranded hundreds of commuters. Many commuters and air travelers were forced to disembark from public transport and walk to their destinations.

Uttara Division Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Police Mu. Al Amin Sarkar reported that police teams engaged in negotiations with worker representatives, successfully reopening one lane for vehicular movement by 1:15 PM. The blockade fully cleared around 1:30 PM as workers vacated the highway. This marks the second blockade in 48 hours in the area, following a similar demonstration on Monday (October 12) where Dakshinkhan garment workers demanded a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.
