The Conscious Civil Society of Gazipur (Conscious Citizens' Community of Gazipur) has demanded the immediate launch and operationalization of the Gazipur-Airport Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, expressing deep frustration over ongoing uncertainty despite the project reaching 97 percent completion.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday (October 17, 2026) at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, Professor Dr. Md. Khasro Miah of the Civil Engineering Department at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET) presented a written statement on behalf of the organization. He asserted that after 14 years of delay, abandoning or dismantling the built infrastructure is completely unacceptable. Dr. Miah highlighted that the BRT corridor would reduce transit time between Gazipur and Dhaka Airport to just 20 minutes, unlocking vast commercial potential in hospitality, real estate, healthcare, and education while significantly easing traffic congestion in Bangladesh's premier industrial hub.
The civil society panel sharply questioned why the government is willing to provide around BDT 800 crore in annual subsidies to operate Dhaka Metro Rail while showing reluctance toward operationalizing Gazipur's BRT. They alleged that vested interests—including private vehicle lobbyists and inefficient bus syndicate operators—might be intentionally stalling the project. To resolve the impasse, the organization submitted a 7-point charter of demands, calling for a binding operational timeline, an independent technical and economic evaluation before any plan alterations, accountability for delayed officials, and the construction of the approved Salna-Uttara-Dour Expressway as an auxiliary route.
