Global Handwashing Day Observed Worldwide Today to Promote Public Health Awareness
Clean water and soap handwashing facilities, highlighted globally on October 15 for infection control and disease prevention.

Today, Thursday (October 15, 2026), marks Global Handwashing Day, an annual international advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent disease.

The global observance originated in 2008 during Stockholm World Water Week in Sweden, when the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) initiated regional and local handwashing drives. Following its initial success, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated October 15 as an annual international campaign. The primary objective of Global Handwashing Day is to foster and support a global culture of handwashing with soap, highlight handwashing practices in every nation, and raise public awareness about the health benefits of proper hygiene.

Internationally, the Global Handwashing Partnership continues its multi-year campaign theme, "Be a Handwashing Hero!", encouraging individuals, schools, healthcare providers, and community leaders to champion clean hands in everyday life. Health agencies emphasize that washing hands thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds remains one of the single most effective barrier measures against diarrheal diseases, respiratory tract infections, and viral pathogens.
