The Ministry of Shipping has initiated the formulation of a comprehensive 'National Port Strategy' aimed at enhancing inter-agency coordination, operational efficiency, and trade competitiveness across Bangladesh's seaports, river ports, and land ports.
Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organized by the Ministry of Shipping at a Dhaka hotel on Sunday (October 11, 2026), Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam stated that the unified framework will prioritize national economic development over the individual jurisdictions of specific authorities or ministries. Developed in technical collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and international experts alongside operational inputs from global logistics leaders—including DP World, Denmark's AP Møller - Maersk, and Singapore's PSA—the policy seeks to streamline terminal management, container handling, customs procedures, and transport connectivity. Minister Alam stressed that while statutory mandates of port authorities, the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Customs, and the Ministry of Commerce will be respected, seamless cross-agency harmony is paramount. State Minister for Shipping Md. Rajib Ahsan MP, Shipping Secretary Zakaria, JICA Bangladesh Country Director Ms. Takahashi, and port chairmen attended the seminar, reaffirming the government's commitment to building a modern, investor-friendly port ecosystem.
