Government Targets 50% Reduction in Road Accidents by 2030: State Minister Habibur Rashid
State Minister for Road Transport and Highways Habibur Rashid addressing stakeholders in Dhaka.

State Minister for Road Transport and Highways Habibur Rashid has declared that the government is operating under a strategic masterplan to slash nationwide road accidents by 50 percent by the year 2030.

Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organized for National Safe Road Day 2026 at the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) auditorium on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the State Minister stressed that achieving road safety requires coordinated action across all transport sectors rather than unfairly shifting blame onto drivers alone. He emphasized that driver working hours, salaries, physical fitness, vision testing, and systemic harassment must be addressed alongside vehicle roadworthiness.

Habibur Rashid called upon transport owners to immediately stop operating unfit vehicles for short-term profit, warning that single fatal crashes ruin lives and devastate transport companies alike. Simultaneously, he directed officials at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and police administration to eliminate harassment and corruption when owners and drivers seek licensing and fitness certifications. The government’s comprehensive strategy will combine safe infrastructure development, strict speed enforcement, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, mandatory certified helmet usage for motorcyclists, and technology-driven traffic control systems.
