In an innovative shift from traditional drainage use, the government has unveiled a "Model Canal" initiative to transform state-owned water bodies into long-term resources through re-excavation, environmental protection, and social forestry.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to officially inaugurate the pilot programme across 20 selected government-owned canals spanning eight divisions in Lalmonirhat on November 19, 2026. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the project aims to benefit approximately 2,400 ultra-poor families by integrating multifaceted economic activities—such as fish and duck farming, seasonal vegetable cultivation, and cottage industries—alongside canal banks.
Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu highlighted that the initiative builds upon the broader electoral commitment to re-excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals nationwide, moving vulnerable communities toward sustainable self-reliance while preserving natural water flows, enhancing irrigation, and supporting the national tree-planting target.
