Grameen Kalyan Appeals High Court Order Over NBR's Tk 666 Crore Tax Demand
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh in Dhaka, where Grameen Kalyan's tax appeal is scheduled for apex court review.

Grameen Kalyan, an organization associated with Nobel laureate and former Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has filed a formal appeal with the Appellate Division challenging a High Court verdict that validated the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) Tk 666 crore tax demand.

The appeal was submitted to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division on Sunday (October 18, 2026). This follows the High Court’s ruling on September 10, 2026, where a bench comprising Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Rezaul Karim dismissed the writs filed by Grameen Kalyan, thereby upholding NBR's legal claim over the unpaid income tax. The full text of the two separate judgments (15 pages and 32 pages respectively) was officially signed and published on October 12.

The tax dispute traces back to 2017, when Grameen Kalyan filed two separate writ petitions challenging NBR's re-evaluated tax assessment covering five fiscal years: 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, and 2016–17. Following past procedural withdrawals and reassignment to a new bench after the August 2024 mass uprising, the High Court conducted comprehensive re-hearings before validating NBR's tax claim, prompting Grameen Kalyan to seek final legal redress from the apex court.
