Greater Mirpur Leguna Association Alleges Armed Takeover of Five Stands and Extortion Demands
Greater Mirpur Leguna Owners-Workers Union leaders addressing news media during a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Friday.

The Greater Mirpur Leguna Owners-Workers Union has publicly alleged that armed miscreants forcibly seized control of five human-hauler (leguna) stands in Mirpur, demanding a daily extortion toll of BDT 300 per vehicle and assaulting transport operators who resisted.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Sagar-Runi Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday afternoon (October 9, 2026), Union President Md. Yakub Ali detailed that on October 5 at around 11:30 AM, a group of 60 to 70 armed individuals forcibly occupied the leguna stands in Mirpur Section-1. He identified key individuals associated with local political figures as being involved in the takeover and illegal extortion drive.

Yakub Ali alleged that when owners refused to pay the BDT 300 daily extortion fee, several owners—including himself, Nazrul Islam, and Babul—were physically assaulted, presenting medical injury reports to reporters. He further stated that Darus Salam Police Station initially refused to record their complaint, prompting transport operators to demand an independent investigation based on available CCTV footage and video evidence, immediate arrest of those involved, and full state protection to ensure safe transport operations in Mirpur.
