Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB) has expressed deep concern regarding the filing of a sedition case against Shampa Goswami, Executive Director of the Prerona Nari Unnayan Sangathan in Satkhira, as well as over reports of continuous surveillance on her and risks to her security.

In a statement issued yesterday, Monday (November 2), the forum demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the allegations.

According to information received from reliable sources, a sedition case was filed against Shampa Goswami under Section 124A of the Penal Code at Shyamnagar Police Station in Satkhira on September 29. Shampa Goswami has alleged that ever since the filing of the case, her residence and organizational office have been kept under police surveillance, and her family members are being subjected to various forms of harassment.

HRFB reminded in its statement that Article 36 of the Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees citizens the right to freedom of movement, while Article 43 ensures the privacy of home and correspondence. It is imperative that allegations regarding the surveillance of any human rights defender's residence and office, as well as the harassment of their family, be considered with utmost seriousness. Prior to leveling such grave charges against any human rights defender—especially those involving participation in international forums—having specific and substantiated grounds is essential, the forum noted.

The organization has called upon the relevant authorities to verify both the legal basis and the truthfulness of the case filed against Shampa Goswami, while simultaneously demanding a thorough and impartial inquiry into the harassment complaints she has raised.

At the same time, HRFB strongly demanded that necessary measures be taken to ensure that Shampa Goswami, her family, and the staff and volunteers of her women's development organization do not become victims of any fear, harassment, or retaliatory actions.
