Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman has stated that earning money is not the ultimate objective in the legal profession; alongside professional responsibilities, a lawyer must be humane. When a client approaches a lawyer in distress, they place their trust and confidence in the lawyer, and honoring that trust is a primary duty.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest on Saturday evening (September 19) at the closing ceremony of the 'NSU Law Fest Season-3' held at North South University (NSU) in the capital.
The Law Minister said that a lawyer is simultaneously accountable to the client and acts as an officer of the court. Assisting the court in reaching correct decisions and playing a role in establishing justice are core responsibilities of a lawyer. Therefore, while protecting the client's interests, a lawyer must also remain responsible toward the court.
Asaduzzaman noted that every client approaching a lawyer is extremely important. Considering the financial capability of the client, lawyers should stand beside helpless people with a humanitarian perspective when necessary. In professional life, the opportunity to work for people alongside financial pursuits must be valued, he added.
Stating that there is no alternative to extensive study and hard work to become a good lawyer, Asaduzzaman emphasized that to succeed in the legal profession, one must build oneself through a combination of honesty, skill, professional responsibility, and human values. There are no shortcuts to success in law; a lawyer establishes themselves through prolonged study, gathering experience, and rigorous hard work.
He described lawyers as the "social engineers" of society, noting that they play a vital role in societal change and development. If there are inconsistencies in any law or if reforms are necessary, lawyers should identify them and provide feedback regarding required amendments, he added.
The Law Minister remarked that when a lawyer stands in court, every word they utter is crucial. Lawyers must acquire the skill to present laws accurately, place case facts and evidence properly, and assist the court through logical arguments.
Highlighting the importance of training for legal practitioners, he mentioned that newly minted lawyers must be equipped with proper training and practical experience after entering the profession, for which the government is taking various initiatives.
Addressing law students, the Law Minister said that if they observe any legal inconsistencies or the need for reform in society, they can submit their thoughts and proposals to the Ministry of Law. These proposals will be reviewed to initiate future legal reforms as necessary, he noted.
He urged young law students to play a significant role in establishing the rule of law, justice, and human rights in the future, sharpening their knowledge and skills in tune with a changing world.
The Law Minister further stated that professionals will encounter various positive and negative experiences in their careers, but the younger generation must choose the right and righteous path. By fulfilling their duties with honesty and humanity, they can establish themselves as successful lawyers.
Organized by the North South University Law and Mooting Society and presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, the closing ceremony was also addressed by NSU Board of Trustees Chairman Aziz Al Kaiser, board members M. A. Kashem and Benzir Ahmed, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Professor Md. Rizwanul Islam, and Chairman of the Department of Law Professor Istiaq Ahmed.
The Law Fest featured various competitions participated in by law students of North South University. Prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners of different segments at the concluding ceremony.
