Former Member of Parliament Major (Retd.) Akhtaruzzaman voiced intense outrage at security personnel at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Saturday (October 3, 2026), refusing to wear a protective helmet while being brought out of a police prison van following his arrest in an airport assault case.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from his DOHS residence in Cantonment, Dhaka, on Friday afternoon following a case filed by Airport Security Officer Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib. The charges stem from an October 1 incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where Akhtaruzzaman allegedly obstructed official duties, verbally abused, and physically shoved Executive Director Group Captain S.M. Ragib Samad during a passenger dispute over luggage delays. When court security officers attempted to put handcuffs and a protective helmet on him at the CMM court premises, Akhtaruzzaman strongly resisted the helmet, shouting, "I will take a police bullet, but I will not wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet has now become a symbol of Awami League rule." While accepting the handcuffs, he repeatedly threw off the helmet placed on his head despite police officers assuring him it was for his personal security. A former two-time BNP MP from Kishoreganj-2 who was expelled from the party in 2022, Akhtaruzzaman joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025.
