The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) has sentenced banned Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif to death for crimes against humanity committed in Kushtia during the July Mass Uprising.
The verdict was handed down at 12:00 PM on Thursday, October 29, 2026, by a three-member judicial panel chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, with Judge Mo. Manjurul Basid and Judge Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir as panel members. The tribunal also sentenced three co-accused—Kushtia District Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan, General Secretary Azgar Ali, and City Awami League General Secretary Ataur Rahman Ata—to imprisonment until natural death. In addition to the custodial sentences, the court ordered the forfeiture of half of all property owned by the four convicted individuals to the state. All four convicts were tried in absentia as they remain absconding.
The prosecution had brought formal charges against the four accused on November 2, 2025, detailing allegations of inflammatory speeches, criminal conspiracy, and the brutal killings of six individuals in Kushtia during the July uprising. After the closing arguments concluded on October 7, 2026, the tribunal kept the verdict CAV (Curia Advisari Vult) before pronouncing today's landmark judgment.
