IGP Used Careless Phrasing Regarding 'Crossfire', Says Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed responding to media inquiries at the National Parliament premises in Dhaka.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir used careless phrasing when uttering the word "crossfire," emphasizing that using such terminology was inappropriate.

The Home Minister made these remarks while responding to reporters' questions on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, 2026, following a meeting of the Special Committee on Constitutional Reform at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Clarifying the police chief's position, Salahuddin Ahmed noted that the IGP had subsequently provided a formal clarification. He explained that the IGP's unintended choice of words occurred while emphasizing strict enforcement of the law, rather than indicating any government directive or personal intent to carry out crossfire operations. Nevertheless, the Minister reiterated that such words should not have been articulated. Furthermore, the Home Minister pledged that the government remains fully committed to ending extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances permanently, hinting at potential legislation to prevent disappearances. He also revealed that the government is actively investigating the disappearance of Miraj Sheikh from Bagerhat and has formally invited international human rights bodies to conduct neutral, independent inquiries into the case.
