'India Had No Choice But to Grant Asylum to Sheikh Hasina': Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi responding to delegate queries at the 5th Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi stated that the Indian government had no practical alternative other than granting asylum to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her sudden arrival on August 5, 2024, emphasizing that she remained the sitting Prime Minister of Bangladesh at the moment of her landing.

Responding to queries during a session at the 5th Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka on Saturday (October 3, 2026), High Commissioner Trivedi recalled the chaotic events surrounding the emergency arrival of the Bangladesh Air Force aircraft in India, noting that Indian authorities were neither prepared nor expecting the landing. Addressing ongoing demands regarding her extradition, Trivedi affirmed that the formal process is bound by established legal frameworks and judicial proceedings, adding that no specific timeframe could be provided while the matter remains under judicial review. He reiterated that India respects rule-of-law mechanisms and that diplomatic responses from New Delhi continue to follow structured legal procedures while wishing peace and stability for the people of Bangladesh.
