India Must Demonstrate Political Will to Extradite Sheikh Hasina, Says State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam responds to press questions regarding diplomatic relations and extradition procedures at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Sunday.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam has emphasized that the extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requires political will from the Indian government alongside formal legal channels.

Responding to media inquiries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (October 4, 2026)—following remarks by Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Saturday—Shama Obayed stated that while established bilateral treaties facilitate the return of accused individuals, expedited legal and diplomatic action from New Delhi is crucial. Addressing online rumors claiming Prime Minister Tarique Rahman canceled a planned visit to San Francisco due to legal or visa complications, the State Minister firmly dismissed the reports as baseless, urging journalists to verify facts. She clarified that the Prime Minister completed a focused, productive bilateral and multilateral schedule in the United States following earlier official visits to China and Malaysia. A targeted delegation comprising the ICT Advisor, Education State Minister, Finance Advisor, and Foreign State Minister was designated for engagement in San Francisco, securing potential partnerships with institutions such as UC Berkeley and Arizona State University. She added that details regarding the Prime Minister’s upcoming official visit to Turkey will be formally announced by the ministry.
