State Minister for Water Resources Alhaj Farhad Hossain Azad has stated that the Farakka Treaty is set to expire on December 12. He emphasized that India can only prove itself as a true friendly state if it renews the treaty by incorporating a "guarantee clause" and ensures a fair share of water from the 54 shared rivers.
The State Minister made these remarks on Sunday (October 11) morning while inspecting the construction site of the Second Karatoya Bridge over the Karatoya River in the Mirgarh area of Dhakkhamara Union under Panchagarh Sadar Upazila.
The State Minister said, "During the tenure of the past fascist government, various controversies and public skepticism arose due to India's backing. Therefore, we believe that India will now put an end to those controversies by granting a fair share of water and including a specific guarantee clause in the agreement. We will not compromise on protecting the rights of the people of Bangladesh."
Regarding the construction of the Second Karatoya Bridge, the State Minister added, "For a long time, the people of Mirgarh and Bhajanpur areas have been waiting for a durable bridge..." (Note: The source text ends mid-sentence here).
