Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam stated that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has become a parliamentary opposition party for the first time in its 85-year history because it consistently failed to understand citizens' fundamental rights, demands, and aspirations.
Speaking to journalists following an official event at Dhanmondi 3/A on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam remarked that Jamaat's historical miscalculations spanned critical junctures—including the 1971 Liberation War, post-independence politics, the Ershad era, 1-11 caretaker governance, and recent political shifts—demonstrating a persistent disconnect from public will. Addressing urban transport issues in the capital, the Minister disclosed that the government is finalizing comprehensive policy guidelines for battery-powered auto-rickshaws. Under the proposed framework, unauthorized electric rickshaws will be banned from primary arterial corridors and high-density zones in Dhaka to prevent gridlock. Acknowledging that the restrictions may cause temporary hardships for drivers, Sheikh Robiul Alam stressed that broader civic interests and capital mobility must take precedence, affirming that Dhaka will not be allowed to become dysfunctional to accommodate isolated group interests.
