Light Beyond the Darkness: Electricity Yet to Reach Tripura Para in Chandanaish, Children Walk 2 Hours to School

Electricity has yet to reach the remote hilly region of Tripura Para under Dhopachhari Union in Chandanaish Upazila, Chattogram. Chandanaish Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Abdur Rahman personally visited the area and observed that as soon as dusk falls, the houses nestled along the hills fall completely silent, as if life itself gets shrouded in deep darkness as the sun sets.

The UNO shared these observations in a post from his official Facebook profile, 'Uno Chandanaish'.

In his post, titled "Light Beyond Darkness: A Glimpse of Life in Dhopachhari Tripura Para", he highlighted that electricity has not yet reached the village. Families who can afford it have installed solar panels to light faint electric bulbs—a tiny protest against the dark. However, in pursuit of education, children have to walk nearly two hours every day along hilly tracks, wet soil, and thorny bushes to reach school. Nighttime study remains a distant dream; children go to sleep as soon as the sun sets due to the lack of light.

Access to daily water is equally challenging, as residents must travel long distances to rely on natural mountain streams (chhora). Carrying water containers on their shoulders and hips is a daily reality, and life comes to a standstill if the streams dry up. Despite these hardships, Thursdays bring a ray of hope when villagers carry their harvested crops along mountain paths to sell at the local market to meet household needs.

UNO Md. Abdur Rahman stated, "The area is extremely remote, lacking electricity and basic civic amenities. Water access is also very difficult. They have been living here since 1986. From the administration, we will extend all possible support to help preserve the heritage of the ethnic minority community in Tripura Para."

During the visit to Dhopachhari Tripura Para, UNO Md. Abdur Rahman was accompanied by Upazila Engineer Asif Mohammad, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mahbub Alam Shawon Bhuiyan, and other officials.
