Retail Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) traders across Bangladesh have announced a total two-day shutdown of all cylinder retail shops scheduled for this Thursday and Friday, protesting persistent regulatory harassment, erratic supply chains, and price gouging by major distributor conglomerates.
Addressing a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday (October 12, 2026), LP Gas Traders Cooperative Association Limited President Selim Khan announced that retail gas shops nationwide will remain closed for 48 hours. He warned that if the government and regulatory authorities fail to address their core grievances, traders will launch an indefinite, tougher nationwide movement. Speaking at the conference, Association General Secretary Nasiruddin Nasim alleged that the entire LPG distribution market has been held hostage by a syndicate of five major companies who systematically manipulate prices.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission's (BERC) October 4 price adjustment, which raised the official price of a 12kg cylinder by Tk 252 to Tk 1,837. However, traders and consumers report that supply shortages have forced real market prices up to Tk 2,000–2,400 per cylinder, leaving grassroots retailers exposed to mobile court fines and consumer friction while primary suppliers operate with impunity.
